They started with 1 minute gesture poses. Boy, that minute goes fast! I need to build some speed. I was unsure of myself when I started but as time went on and the poses became longer, I started to relax.
I was way out of my league as far as talent goes. There was about 12 people in the studio and all seemed like pros. I had a retired art teacher on my left, a sculptor from France on my right and a recent architecture grad with a minor in art in front of me working from a low art bench. I felt like a kindergartener playing with the high school kids. No one made me uncomfortable when walking by and looking at my sketches. I hope to improve the more I do it as time goes on. I had a really good time and look forward to the next one.

These are fantastic! They really are. I remember LOVE gesture drawing in art class- my teacher used to put on old movies of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and we'd gesture draw them in the midst of dance. It was magical. I didn't like life drawing so much in college- everyone seemed so uncomfortable with the models, it was, like, "just get over it! and draw!" I remember the poor guy next to me was so wrecked by it he just drew GIANT pictures of the model's toe, page after page, just a toe. He didn't have a weird obsession with toes, he just told me he just couldn't deal with nudity- it was his first time out of his tiny little conservative town and he was freaking out a bit.
ReplyDeleteI never thought to do gesture drawings from a movie. I may have to try that. Very funny story about the guy and the toe!
DeleteHa! Love your story, Chel - that's too funny (giant toes!). Stephanie, these are great! You aren't anywhere near as untalented as you would lead me to believe! You did a wonderful job. By the third class, you'll relax enough to see major changes. I'm so jealous! There's nothing else like being able to attend life drawing classes. Thanks for reminding me you posted these, and thanks for your kind comments on my post today. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteThanks Angelia. I am on the waiting list for Tuesday. That day and time seems to fill up of the fastest and I am reserved for Wednesday at a different studio but that one will be 2 long poses of 1 hour each. We'll see how that goes.
