My Journey Into Art

Mona

I just completed the second whimsy girl which I have named Mona. It's the name that popped into my head so I'm going with it.

These are so fun to do. I have a feeling I will be doing these for the next little while.

I'm still working in my art journal daily and I want to start sketching an object a day in graphite to improve my drawing skills. I also still want to work on my watercolors because I don't want to lose what I have gained in learning to work with them. Too many things I want to do, not enough time! Isn't that how it always is?!

  1. How awesome that you have another one and I LOVE LOVE HER NAME!! She is so cute! The background color/design really stands out against the girl. I always love your backgrounds.
How do you start a painting and the background color & design? Do you sketch or look for ideas to paint?
    Keep having fun and sharing!

    1. Dawn: I just pick the colors that appeal to me in the moment and go with it. I really don't pre-plan a painting when I am working from imagination like these girls. I may have an idea in my head that I want to get down on the canvas, like her having pigtails, but other than that, it's all intuitive and I just run with it.

  2. I LOVE Mona! I can also identify exactly with what you said- I have a few things I want to art journal but I want to paint more. And I also want to get back to jewelry. I know if I don't paint soon, I will start to "lose" some of the technique I picked up these last few doodles. Argh. It's like this big agonizing choice, all the time. Maybe I should just assign days to each and stick to that.

    1. See, if I planned it out like a schedule, it would feel too much like work and I wouldn't do it. But if that works for you, go for it! I started a watercolor painting this morning from an old photograph I took years ago. I think I chose too challenging a piece but I will work through it. It's a monarch butterfly on a purple coneflower with a couple of other coneflowers surrounding it.
