I love the sound of the Djembe drums. A few years ago I went to this concert and was so moved by the music. The name of this group is called the Djembabes and they are local here in Austin. One of the members of the group offered introductory lessons at her home. Several of my friends and I joined the class. We went weekly for a couple of months. I loved it! At the end of the session, we invited our families to come watch us perform together as a group. In the video that I have here at the 4:30 mark, is one of the songs we learned and performed. When I played the Djembe, I became one with the drum. I can't explain the feeling. It was really a spiritual event for me. Now every time I hear Djembe drums I get that feeling inside. It awakens something in me and I feel so alive.
This is the art that came out of listening to the music. I think it's a bit too busy and I should have stopped sooner but I just went with it.

8" X 10" canvas, acrylics
First of all, that paiting is amazin. I don't think it's anything but brilliant and awake and alive. I LOVE the way the dots seem to pulse to the music- the whole paiting does, actually. This is WONDERFUL, Steph.
ReplyDeleteAnd that music is divine. I never knew that's what it was- I only knew when I heard it in Paul Simon's songs (Obvious Child- one of my all time favorites), I wanted to get up and pound my feet. Now I have something new to explore- thank you!
Sometimes just going with the flow of things produces interesting results. I really enjoyed the process of simply feeling the music and having it transfer to the canvas. I need to do that more. I generally paint in silence.
DeleteStephanie this is outstanding. It seems the exuberant music may have blown the feathers off the bird! Thanks for including the video; your bright colors reflect the joyful drumming.
ReplyDeleteHa! Funny you should say that about the feathers. When it was done, I couldn't decide whether those were leaves or feathers. I like the imagery of the feathers being blown off the bird! Thank you!
