My Journey Into Art

What's Her Story?

I painted this last night in my Stillman & Birn Alpha Journal using gouache. The paper took a lot of water really well! I was pleasantly surprised. I actually sprayed the page with water to get the drip marks. While there was a little buckling when very wet, it dried pretty flat. I am very new to gouache and still getting a feel for them. I have a very limited palette; the three primary colors and black and white. It's good color mixing practice.

In the last few days, I have clicked over to videos and other websites from links that people have posted on Facebook. It was things people found empowering or resonating to them. To me, they were stories filled with pain. I was so saddened by some of the things I read and watched. There is so much pain and heartache in the world. I feel that this journal spread reflects how those things I read and watched transferred onto the page.

What's her story? There seems to be pain here. I feel like I need to add some journaling to the page to give her some hope and love.

  1. Really moving. She looks like she had something tough happen to her, but now her life is opening to more possibility.

I know what you mean about the "inspiring videos"- I get that way with animal stories. I have a huge, tender heart when it comes to anything about animals, and stories about animals getting abused and then finding new homes always makes me bawl and hurt for a while. It's to the point where I don't even click on the stories or links, unless it's a call to action and I can do something to help. It just hits at a deep level and doesn't leave me for days.

    1. That's what happened to me. These stories stuck with me for days. I felt better, almost cleansed of those sad feelings once I painted her. It was as if I transferred the sadness to the page and left it there instead of in me.

  3. Interesting post. The blogging world is an ocean of emotions and your artistic response is dramatic. For me her eyes glaring behind the curtain is powerful.

    1. Yes, I agree...lots of emotions from the blogging world. Sometimes it's hard not to feel the pain that people write, art or make movies about. I tend to be quite sensitive.

  4. This is good, I can feel the sadness and trouble times she had. Great colors you picked and the drips. It is a sad and heartbreaking world we live in, no news, newspapers for me. I think it's neat that you paint/sketch so many topics, that's what I like about your blog, it's always a surprise.

    1. Your last sentence made me laugh. Half the time I don't know myself what I'm going to paint or sketch. It's a surprise to me too!
