Neon Circus

I can't help myself with these neon colors.  I'm on a bit of a frenzy with them.  I feel really playful when I use them and think that comes through.  My art journal is the perfect place to do this in.

29 Faces 25 and 26

Here are my faces for the last two days.  The first one is just the quick face that I have been doing and the second is a cat portrait of Pickles.  Pickles has Feline Leukemia and lives at the cat sanctuary where I volunteer.  The Shadow Cats sanctuary houses 80 cats that are not adoptable either due to behavioral issues or because they have Feline Leukemia or other long term illness.  These cats get to live their life out in a home-like setting.  It's an amazing place.  They are having an auction in June to raise money for the sanctuary to keep things running.  With 80 special needs cats, that's a lot of food, litter and medication needed on a daily basis.  I offered to donate three portrait paintings of some of the more popular cats to help raise some funds.

Fun with Neon Colors

The assignment for March in the True Free Spirit class was to work in our art journals.  Mindy uses neon colors in her work and I've taken to them like crazy.  I never knew I'd like such bright colors. Bright colors can be intimidating but working in my art journal makes these experiments easy. I had such a fun time making this spread.  I see lots of neon in my future.

29 Faces #23 & 24

I'm  posting today's and tomorrow's now because I don't think I will have time to post until Monday.  I just love how just changing the eyebrows, or the shape of the eyes or the nose gets a whole new looking person.

29 Faces #21 & 22

Sorry about the red glow on their faces.  It's from my phone case.  I didn't have time to take the photos with my real camera so my phone camera will have to do today.

Art Journal for True Free Spirit

I decided to do the February assignment for my True Free Spirit class in my art journal.  I feel like I've been in a creative slump as far as painting goes.  I have so many canvases in various stages that it's kind of ridiculous.  I look at them all and instead of finishing them, I get ideas about starting new ones but I don't want to start new ones until I finish the old ones, but I really, really want to try some new idea that pops into my head and I battle with myself and nothing gets done.  This assignment was good for me.  I think my painting mojo is back and look forward to working on some of my unfinished paintings and starting some new ones without guilt.

My youngest has been sick and it required an ER visit. We had been up for almost 24 hours yesterday.  I was tired and wanted to nap but he was too wired from steroids to sleep so he played on the computer and I decided to throw paint around in my journal.  I didn't have anything in mind but to play. I ended up with  a very nice background with lots of layers and textures

In the evening after everyone was down for the night, I decided to tackle my February assignment on the same spread that I made earlier in the day.  The idea of this assignment was to add some collage elements to our girls.  I added an eye, her mouth, her dress and her legs from magazine cutouts.

After I made the girl, I realized that it looked like she was looking up at something.  So I painted a tree and added an owl.  Of course that got me Whoo whoo-ing to myself.  Then I added the Whoo Loves You?  And that got me thinking about love.  I know who loves me and I do feel loved but something that I haven't always done was taking time to love myself.  I've been working very hard at changing that.  I take time to eat well, exercise, and do the things that fill me up like make art, read and other self-care practices.  In the process, I've become a much happier person and that transfers over to all areas of my life and relationships.  The negative self talk has pretty much disappeared. When it starts to creep in, I remind myself of how far I've come.  When faced with something that I'm about to do that may or may not be in my best interest, I ask myself, 'Does it serve my greater goal?'  If it doesn't, then I don't do it, eat it, or skip it.

I hope you love yourself.

Unfortunately, I've had to turn back on word verification for comments.  It seems I'm suddenly getting a lot of Anonymous spam comments.  I know that this can be a deterrent for real people who'd rather not comment if they have to do a word verification but the amount of spam seems to be increasing daily.  I hope this won't prevent readers from commenting however I don't see another way to control this other than moderating each comment.

I hope you understand.

A Quickie Update

I haven't dropped the 29 faces.  I had a very weird kind of week where I was very low energy and unproductive in general.  It felt like every little thing was a huge chore and required lots of effort that I didn't have even though I pushed through most of my regular life responsibilities. Blogging took a back seat. However, I've been drawing faces and whimsical characters and even a doodle bird.  I'll take photos and share them all in the next day or so to catch me up.

29 Faces #11

She has kind of a big chin/jaw.  I guess that's the beauty in drawing faces or in faces in general, they come in all shapes and sizes.

Experimenting with Bleeding Art Tissue and a Challenge

I bought bleeding art tissue to try out.  I have seen from other blogs that some artists have referenced using bleeding art tissue in their art piece.  I wasn't quite sure exactly what it did.  I mean the description of bleeding art tissue is somewhat explanatory, it's tissue paper that bleeds color.  I was curious to see it in action for myself.

I decided at the last minute to use my phone to take photos as I experimented with it for the first time.  I will describe what I was doing at the beginning of each photo.

I sprayed both sides of my art journal pages with water and used my fingers to spread it all out. You can use a brush.

wet pages

I cut out squares of the tissue and laid them out on one side of the page.

2013-02-04 15.14.57

I sprayed the squares with water so that they would release their dyes.

2013-02-04 15.15.15

I closed my journal and pressed down hard on the cover so that the other side of the page would hopefully get some color as well.

2013-02-04 15.15.36

I opened it up to see what I got.  I was pleasantly surprised to see how much color transferred to the other side.

2013-02-04 15.17.33

I removed the bleeding art tissue.

2013-02-04 15.19.53

The dye does bleed onto your hands so if that's an issue for you, then wear some gloves.  It took several hand washings with soap to get it all off.

2013-02-04 15.26.15

I used my Inktense pencils to outline around each square to make it patchwork quilt-like.

2013-02-04 15.56.29

I wet the Inktense lines with water to soften them and added black stitching with a Pitt pen.  I added some head shapes with acrylic paint.

2013-02-04 16.35.12

And here is the final result.  I did this spread for Artists In Blogland Color This Quote Challenge.  The quote reads:  Good friends are like quilts - they age with you yet never lose their warmth.

Cast of Characters Continue to Grow

In addition to the faces, I'm also doing these quirky little characters.  I just get a kick out of them.  They seem to each have their own personality.  I think my favorite from this group is the man.  He makes me giggle.  I'm going to count this as #10 for the 29 Faces Challenge.  I did the one at the bottom last night.

29 Faces #6

Another dude.  It's interesting that when I start a face that I have no clue what's going to emerge.  I don't go in thinking I'm going to do a man or a woman or realistic versus whimsy.  I generally start with the eyes and then depending on what they look like, it becomes male or female.  I have to say that I'm really enjoying these sketches.  It's become a nightly ritual before I go to sleep.

29 Faces #5

And here is #5.  She was a quick one. I like varying it up a bit between somewhat realistic and whimsical.  All of these sketches are from imagination.  I am not looking at any sort of reference of men or women faces when sketching them.  My intention for this challenge is just to sketch every day and make it through to 29 faces this time.

Prompt 6ix #5

I completed this prompt last night.  I'm a bit late in the game as prompt #6 came out this morning but here's my interpretation. The prompts were Aquamarine, Peaceful, Stamped Circles, Cactus, Symbol and Blossom.

I mulled over how to put these words and color together.  The idea of the ocean came to me suddenly and then I knew that was how I was going to put it together.  I used aquamarine for the water, peaceful is what I feel when I am by the ocean and the quote really relates to how I feel.  I get a yearning or calling every year to be by the ocean.  We didn't make it there last summer but I really want to try to get to the ocean this summer.  Stamped circles from a toilet paper roll was used as the base of the coral.  I made an island to place the cactus and the blossom on top.  The symbol is of Aquarius which is my sign.  I really like how this all came together.  It's more of child-like carefree type of drawing and that's the mood I was in when I worked on it.  I just wanted to play and not worry about how realistic or pretty it needed to be.  I love my art journal for that reason.  And I'm not shy to share my not so beautiful work.  It's all a part of me.

29 Faces #4

I went with a more whimsical face last night.  I had fun dressing her up.  She looks a bit alien-ish with those very large eyes and big head.  I like her.  She's quirky.

I really like that just changing shape and size of features I can get some really unique faces even though I'm pretty much doing the same thing over and over again.

Here is face #2.  It was sketched last night while in bed.  I've taken up this habit lately of bringing my sketchbook to bed with me.  It's a nice way to end the day.

29 Faces in February

I saw that the 29 Faces Challenge is going on again.  I did it back in September and only made through to about 24 or 25 faces.  Since lately I've been on a sketching faces kick, I figured that I could keep up this time.  I'm going to take photos with my phone and upload those since that will be easiest.  I may not upload daily but rather group them together after a few days.  We'll see how time goes and what I'm able to accomplish.

Here's my first sketch done while waiting for my boys at swim lessons.  My plan is to do only pencil sketches.

Cardboard Art Exchange

In my True Free Spirit class with Mindy Lacefield there is an art exchange going on based on a video that Mindy put out of her creating art on cardboard.  You can watch the video here:

I wasn't able to be as free as Mindy is with her art.  I got really cool backgrounds on mine and then I got stuck.  So I painted stuff that was more in line with me.  I did use some of the techniques that I'm learning from Mindy's class.

The way the exchange works is that each person sends in 6 paintings and then we will each get back 6 different paintings from 6 different artists.  I can't wait to see what I get!

This is what I'm sending.
